Roberto Nicola Cassinelli was born in Genoa on 10 December 1956. He is married and has two children. He obtained a classical high school diploma at the Vittorino da Feltre Institute in Genoa and a law degree at the University of Milan.
On 19 February 2025, he was sworn in by the President of the Republic as a Judge of the Constitutional Court, elected by the Parliament in session on 13 February of the same year, and from the same date he suspended the practice of law.
Until his election as Judge of the Constitutional Court, he practised as a lawyer at the Supreme Court of Cassation and was entered in the Register of Legal Auditors. He was a Member of Parliament in the 16th and 18th legislatures, and a Senator of the Republic in the 17th legislature.
On 20 February 2025, the President of the Republic awarded him the Honour of Knight of Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
Awarded the “Dr. Vicente Rocafuerte” Honour for Social and Political Merit by the Republic of Ecuador. Awarded the Silver Medal of Merit by the National Forensic Council, the highest decoration of the Italian Bar.
Pupil of Prof. Franco Bonelli, from 1985 until his election as Judge of the Constitutional Court he practised as a lawyer, also acting as an arbitrator in civil law matters, with particular reference to commercial, corporate, banking, financial and bankruptcy law.
He was a member of the Council of the Bar Association of the Court of Genoa for two mandates, and later an Auditor of the same Council. He was Of Counsel of Studio Legale Associato Carnelutti from 2018 to 2025, working mainly on restructuring and commercial law transactions.
He has held, among others, the positions of extraordinary commissioner, judicial commissioner, chairman, director and statutory auditor in numerous foundations and companies of national importance.
